How They Work

Boiler (Hydronic Heat)

Heats water and distributes it through radiators, baseboard heaters, or radiant floor tubing. Heat radiates from these surfaces into the room. No ductwork required.

Furnace (Forced Air)

Heats air and distributes it through ductwork and vents throughout the home. Heat comes from air blowing from registers in floors, walls, or ceilings.

The Comfort Difference

Most people who've lived with both systems strongly prefer radiant heat. Here's why:

  • Radiant heat warms surfaces and objects in a room, not just the air — the room feels warmer at a lower thermostat setting
  • No drafts from vents — heat distribution is gradual and even
  • Silent operation — no blower noise, no duct expansion/contraction sounds
  • Indoor humidity is preserved (forced air notoriously dries out air in winter)
  • No duct system to circulate dust, allergens, or VOCs

The Practical Decision

In most cases, the decision is made for you by what's already in your home:

  • You have a boiler now: Replace it with a new high-efficiency boiler. The piping, radiators, and zones are already there — rebuilding the whole system as forced air is rarely worth it unless you're doing a major renovation.
  • You have a furnace now: Replace it with a new high-efficiency furnace, or evaluate whether a heat pump using the existing ductwork makes more sense economically.
  • New construction or major renovation: This is where the choice is real. Consider your cooling needs — if you need central AC, forced air's shared ductwork is convenient. If you prefer radiant heat and will add mini-splits for cooling, a boiler may be the better long-term choice.
