Safe steps you can take before we arrive. These may restore heat quickly or help prevent further damage.

Furnace or Boiler Won't Start

1.Check that the thermostat is set to Heat and above current room temp
2.Verify the emergency shutoff switch (looks like a light switch near unit) is ON
3.Check the circuit breaker for the furnace/boiler
4.Press the reset button on the burner (once only — if it trips again, stop)
5.Call us — repeated resets without a fix can cause fuel flooding

Boiler is Leaking Water

1.Locate and turn off the water supply valve to the boiler
2.Turn the boiler power switch OFF
3.Do not attempt to restart until a technician has inspected it
4.Note where the leak is coming from (pipe joint, relief valve, tank body)
5.Call us immediately — a leaking boiler can cause significant water damage

Carbon Monoxide Alarm TriggeringURGENT

1.Get everyone out of the house immediately — do not delay
2.Leave the door open as you exit
3.Do not re-enter for any reason
4.Call 911 from outside or a neighbor's home
5.Do not use the heating system until it has been inspected and cleared

Heat Pump Stopped Heating

1.Check that the mode is set to 'Heat' (not Cool or Fan Only)
2.Check if the outdoor unit is buried in snow or ice — clear around it
3.Verify the air filter inside is not clogged
4.Look for an error code on the indoor unit display
5.Call us — common causes include refrigerant issues or a failed defrost board

No Heat in Freezing TemperaturesURGENT

1.Use a portable electric space heater to protect pipes while waiting
2.Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls to keep pipes warm
3.Know where your main water shutoff is in case pipes freeze and burst
4.Keep interior doors open to circulate any remaining warmth
5.Call us now — this is our highest priority call type in winter

Pressure Relief Valve Discharging

1.Turn the boiler or water heater OFF immediately
2.Do not cap or plug the relief valve — it's a safety device
3.The discharge indicates the system pressure is dangerously high
4.Likely causes: waterlogged expansion tank or faulty fill valve
5.Call us before restarting the system

Critical: Do NOT Do These Things

Do NOT repeatedly press the furnace reset button — this floods the combustion chamber with fuel

Do NOT cap or plug a leaking pressure relief valve

Do NOT re-enter a home when a CO alarm has triggered

Do NOT run a portable generator indoors or in a garage

Do NOT light pilot lights if you smell gas — evacuate and call the gas company

Do NOT run a heating system that is leaking water or fuel

Protecting Your Pipes While Heat Is Out

Set up electric space heaters in rooms with water pipes on exterior walls

Keep cabinet doors open under sinks on exterior walls

Let a thin trickle of water run from faucets connected to vulnerable pipes

Know where your main water shutoff valve is — turn it off if you leave

Keep interior doors open to circulate any remaining warmth

A burst pipe can cause extensive water damage — shut off water if safe and call for current urgent availability
